So...this happened...

Rock Hall, MD Sprint Triathlon. June 2, 2013.
(As in...6 months from today.)
750 Meter Swim
15 Mile Bike
5K Run

YOWZA.

Why a triathlon, you might ask? Well...a few reasons:

I'm a believer in FITNESS. I don't want to be a runner. I don't want to be a swimmer. Ok...I might want to be a cyclist...but we can deal with that later. Mostly, I want to be fit. I like the idea of mixing it up...combining the disciplines, along with strength training and some yoga.

I'm hoping that a variety of disciplines will help to prevent repetitive use injuries, particularly since I'm at a higher weight/lower fitness level than I was last year. (Though that will change.)

And...a triathlon seems bad ass. And I could get into that.

Some initial thoughts:
  • I'm really excited.
  • I'm really terrified.
  • Terrified...in no small part because I'm going to have to wear something like this:

Orca 226 Kompression Race Suit - Womens
  • That's a lot of spandex. Even for a thin person. AND...the brand name is Orca. As in...a whale. Really? Is this some sort of joke? Don't even get me started about the possibility of a wetsuit. I refuse to contemplate this possibility. Remember the last post? I'm diving in before I think too much about it.
  • Yesterday, YouTube taught me how to pump up the tires in my bike. I'm guessing that this will not be the last time that YouTube teaches me about bike maintenance in the next 6 months. Next up, how to change a tire. Lord.
  • I'm very lucky to have an awesome personal trainer, and a friend to train with for this adventure. I'm also really thankful for a SUPER informative online community of bloggers (especially Swim. Bike. Mom.) and message boards (BeginnerTriathlete.com) that provide awesome information.
To those of you reading this who have done triathlons (both I and you know who you are), I'm ready for any advice/encouragement you've got! :-)

  2. Changing a bike tire is super easy. Just make sure that you get some tire levers or you'll never get your tires off...
